Lakedance & Bloomingdale XXL

On saturday the 22nd we’ll be playing at the Defected area at Lakedance in Best, The Netherlands.
The next day, the whole Defected crew moves to Bloomingdale at Bloemendaal beach to launch the upcoming Amsterdam In The House compilation. Nice!

Defected In The House Amsterdam ’09

Defected Records dedicates its 30th compilation to Amsterdam. The double cd Defected In The House presents Amsterdam 09 is mixed by our friends Roog & Greg of Hardsoul and yours truly.
The double album will be released on august 28th and comes with a booklet with all of Hardsoul’s and our favourite spots in Amsterdam.

We all put a lot of effort and hard work into this mix. Expect lots of exclusives and edits especially made for this compilation. Some of them will be available as separate download.

Here’s an overview with some comments of our part of the compilation:

1. Fresh Tunes #1 – Ha Ha (CP Re-edit)
We originally released this back in 1993 as a white label, and later licensed it to Strictly Rhythm. This is a cool edit we did for our DJ-sets.

2. Basco – Only You (TGM Remix – CP Re-edit)
Back in the 90′s Basco was our breakbeat project. We still play the TGM mix of this song, but we thought it needed some more oompf. So we did an edit and remastered it, and is know a perfect warm-up for our sets.

3. Chocolate Puma – Whohadnuffdrums’ – Chocolate Puma – Dub of Boom / Michel Cleis Ft. Totó La Momposina – La Mezcla
So here’s 3 tracks on top of each other. Shovell banging the drums on Whohaddrums, the mad sounds of Dub Of Boom and the cool percussion of La Mezcla.

4. Chocolate Puma – Route’ – Louie Vega and Jay – Sinister / Sealee starring Julie McKnight – Diamond Life (Accapella)
This track was originally a remix we did a few years ago for a certain major label, but it was rejected. We still liked the backing track, so we threw away the original vocals and put the lovely Julie McKnight on top.

5. Bassjackers – Sujo’ (Bart B More Balkan Edit – CP Refix) / Todd Terry presents CLS – Can You Feel It (Accapella)
Very cool track by Dutch producers Bassjackers. We like the bassdrum pattern. Bart B More did the Balkan Edit, and we fixed it with some extra drums and the Can You Feel It vocals.

6. Sole Fusion – Bass Tone (Chocolate Puma Remix)
This was a tough one, remixing one of our favourite classics by Sole Fusion. But in the end it works very well!

7. Jark Prongo – Big Bam Boom
A track we did under our Jark Prongo moniker. We did this track a few years ago, but it never got released. We always play it in our sets, so we thought it was time to bring it out. Minimal bad-ass crunk tech.

8. Bingo Players vs Chocolate Puma – Disco Electrique (Vocal Mix)
Our biggest track since Miami. Still ripping dancefloors.

9. Sil – Dirty Windows’ (Chocolate Puma Remix) / Enzyme Black – I Can See The Light (Accapella)
One of Zki’s first records, a collab he did with Olav Basoski. Recently we gave it the CP treatment.

10. Chocolate Puma – I Wanna Be U (2009 Rework)

Our first Chocolate Puma release. Hit the UK chart at #6 in 2001. Featured here is our 2009 rework, which hopefully captures the same feeling, but has tighter and a more up to date production.

11. Chocolate Puma – Bugel
Another exclusive. Nice, dubby and a bit weird. That’s how we like it.

12. Chocolate Puma Ft. Shermanology – Only Love Can Save Me (Dub)

The dub of this collab with the mighty Shermanology.

13. Chocolate Puma vs Baggi Begovic Ft. Mitch Crown – Solarianism

And yet another exclusive. First time we’re doing a collab with housemaster Baggi and the incredible Mitch, and we think it turned out prety good! Also check the collab we did with Hardsoul. It’s featured on their CD and it’s called R2G2.

14. Chocolate Puma – Morning Rain (Moist Dub Bonus Beats) / Bart Claessen – First Light (Chocolate Puma Chords) / Chocolate Puma – Believe (Accapella)

Here we put another 3 songs together. The Moist Bonus Beats of Morning Rain always work very well, and combined with the chords of our remix for First Light and vocals of Always & Forever singer David, it got even better.

15. Shovell & The Latin Hooligans – Soul Makossa (Chocolate Puma Remix)

Still a favourite on our dancefloors. Tribal saxophone on acid.

16. Klement Bonelli & Brahms – Los Chicanos (Main Mix) / D.H.S. – House Of God ($50 Mix)
When we got the bootleg Koen Groeneveld did of House Of God we thought it was massive. The same goes for Bonelli & Brahms’ Los Chicanos. So when we mashed the 2 together it ended up in total mayhem.

Busy!

Last month was a very busy month for us! Lots of gigs and lots of studio work!

Bloemendaal was intense, Dance Valley was massive, Matrixx in the park was crazy, Cannes was posh and mad as hell!

We just finished work on our upcoming ‘Defected In The House Amsterdam’ compilation, for which we made lots of special edits and exclusive new tracks, and did collaborations with Baggi Bagovic and Hardsoul. It will be hitting the shops in a few weeks.

Back in 1993 we did a Fresh Fruit Remix of ‘South Street Player – Who Keeps Changing Your Mind’. At that time we had such crappy equipment, that we couldn’t do a full vocal mix, but only a dub. We fixed that now and delivered a full vocal edit of this classic Remix. We also remixed the classic Masters At Work Track ‘Bass Tone’ by Sole Fusion. Both should be out soon on Strictly.

We also remixed a song by two really big international artists, and we think it turned out pretty neat! Expect that within the next few weeks.

We’ll be diving back into the studio now and will be preparing for our upcoming gigs.

Interview with Ministry Of Sound

Hello, Hello! A big thank you for sitting down with us ahead of this Saturdays ‘Strictly Rhythm’ it looks set to be a blinder!!
Right, so first and foremost…What can we look forward to this Saturday?

We’re playing at the 20th anniversary of the most influential house label ever, Strictly Rhythm. So you can imagine we’re very excited. And the fact that the party is held at Ministry of Sound doesn’t do any harm either.

How would you describe your sound and style?

In our productions we always focus on the beats, they have to be rocking and funky. If the beats are laid out, we can go in every direction. From smooth vocals to freaked out electronic sounds. As long as it has a good vibe and the right amount of energy. And as we’re only playing our own production and remixes, that’s what you can expect. Banging beats and lots of energy.

You guys have worked under the alias of name aside from Chocolate Puma such as ‘The Goodmen’ what’s the philosophy behind this?
We used a lot of aliases in the past. It was just another era. In the early 90′s using different names was very common. We always have been all over the place, and as we have been producing so many styles of music and so many tracks, we figured we needed as many aliases. Now times have changed, we’ve grown up a little, the whole game changed, and it just feel right to stick to one project name. We’re more focused then ever.

Where did the name Chocolate Puma come from?

We used to have a brown goldfish in the studio called Puma. So there you have it.

Since first rising onto the scene, how would you say your style progressed over the last years?

We’re still pretty eclectic, but our sound matured. In the early days we were like young kids in a candy store, trying everything at the same time. Now we’re a bit more focused, while still trying to keep it fresh. Production wise a lot has changed because of the new studio techniques. From cutting tape and using dusty mixing desks, to having your complete studio in a laptop, we’ve seen it all. But in the end we still love to make proper dance music.

What influences you guys when you go into the studio?

Almost everything, from records by young upcoming producers, old skool soul, 90ties house, the weather, punk rhythms, movie themes and vintage car sounds, to new plug-ins, hip hop, fashion hipsters and weird music blogs, you name it.

Have you got any tips for any rising producers out there?

Be original. Be yourself. Work hard. Do it for the music, not the fame.

What producers/ DJs are doing it for you at the moment?

Bart B more, Bingo Players, Baggi Begovic, Prok & Fitch, ….

What are your top ten tracks?
There are 3 tracks that are absolutely setting the dance floor on fire at the moment.
- our latest collaboration with Bingo Players – Disco Electrique,
- our remix for Shovell – Soul Makossa,
- and our remix of the classic Sole Fusion – Bass Tone on Strictly.
Other favorites are
- Sil – Dirty Windows (Chocolate Puma Remix),
- Bizarre Inc – Playing With Knives (CP Bootleg),
- Bart B More – So It Goes (Chocolate Puma Remix),
- Chocolate Puma – Dub Of Boom, Only Love Can Save Me, Morning Rain (Moist Beats)
- and some new trippy futuristic weird untitled demos we’ve been testing out lately.

What do you guys prefer producing in the studio or DJ-ing to a crowd?
We love to do both. When we’re in the studio we can’t wait to test out our latest tracks. And when we’re in front of a crowd we get really inspired by the energy the people give us. It puts the sounds we create in the studio in a whole new perspective. We then can’t wait to get back in the studio to translate that feeling into new music.

What would you say has been your biggest achievement?

After 18 years of producing records still being around.

How does the crowd differ in Holland from anywhere else in the world?

The Dutch crowd is known for being a bit more critical, so you really have to work a little bit harder to get them throwing their hands in the air. But that’s a good thing, it keeps us sharp. And maybe that’s something that sets Dutch DJ’s apart from the rest?

Where in the world is your favourite place to play?

This year’s WMC in Miami has been very good for us. The kids in Eastern Europe are always insane (in a good way!), and Sao Paulo is fantastic!

Your playing at DanceValley, will you be playing any other festivals this summer?
We’ve been known for always playing anywhere in the world, but in Holland. But this year we’re doing a lot of Dutch festivals. For example Free Your Mind, Defected In The House @  Lakedance, and some really nice and cozy festivals like Trix in the Mix, Zomerkriebels and Mattrix at the Park.

Have you got any funny stories from any past festivals?

Well…maybe not funny but nevertheless very memorable. While playing at this massive 40.000 people festival in Brazil, all of a sudden Zki disappeared off the stage. So when I looked down, there he was, laying on the concrete, next to a girl! It turned out that they had these banners behind the 10 ft high stage, but forgot to make a proper fence, and as a result they both fell down. Fortunately they had no major injuries, apart from some scratches and bruises.

Talking of summer what’s your favourite ice-cream flavour?

Chocolate Fudge of course..

Lastly, what do you think you would been doing now if you weren’t a DJ?
Ice cream manufacturer!

Thanks guys, you’ve been great!

Welcome!

Back From WMC

Sunburn, plastic, battling Bart B More on the CDJ’s @ Laidback Luke’s Super You&Me, poolparty @ Sagamore, Paris, sneakers, Sushi Samba, Nikki Beach, Soul Makossa on acid, Larry Tee’s glasses, killing the speakers with the new Bingo Players Vs Chocolate Puma, Only Love Can Save Me, jetlag, dubstep wobbles, and a nice review of Defected Clubland Adventures:

http://www.nocturnalmagazine.net/events/photos/20090324-defected/

“Battling for our attention was Dutch super-duo, and kick ass DJs in their own right, Chocolate Puma. Dropping fresh new remixes that even Mr. Dunmore hadn’t heard, the Pumas were as sweet and tasty as their name implies. Jacking drums, uber cool vocals, and fresh choons their set definitely made us upset that A) they weren’t in the main room and B) they were on directly opposite Roog! But if their awesomeness is any indication we won’t have to wait for those issues to be rectified next year!”

Time to get back to the studio!
