ADE is Europe’s most important destination for the dance music. It’s an event designed not just for industry big wigs, but also for fanatical clubbers. Hailed as ‘the Miami of Europe’, ADE is the place to make a big noise and get noticed, and this year it’s all about Defected Records and Strictly Rhythm – The Original House Mafia.
In true Mafia style this is like two of the scenes original family’s getting together. House music’s biggest and best loved vocalists will be specially flown over to perform. Barbara Tucker will be singing ‘Beautiful People’ and ‘Most Precious Love’, the mighty Steve Edwards ‘World, Hold On’ and Marc Evans ‘The Way You Love me’. Ben Westbeech will also sing Live and DJ too. All the artists will all be backed by the Defected/Strictly all stars and a special 5 piece band led by Robin Faze Action.
Coupled with appearances from both The UK’s and Holland’s strongest DJ talent including appearances from The Shapeshifters, ATFC, Hardsoul, Michel Cleis, and yours truly, this is sure to be a memorable event at this year’s ADE.

Like it or not, Amsterdam is officially the new dance capital of Europe.
Think of Amsterdam and one of the following things will probably pop into your head fairly swiftly; bicycles, red lights, canals, marijuana – and while a combination of all four of these may be a little dangerous, in moderation it is understood that it’s one of the world’s most ‘fun’ cities. However, unless you’re a resident, what you may not immediately associate with Amsterdam is music.
That’s all about to change.
Amsterdam is officially the new dance capital of Europe. Not convinced? Just look at the evidence. For one, it hosts the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) which attracts thousands of clubbers and industry types from across the world to mingle, work, party and discuss the scene. A place where big name DJs long to perform, collaborations are forged to produce next year’s anthems and one of the places where the future of the dance scene is mulled over, disputed and ultimately decided.
Far from being confined to a long weekend of hedonism though, Amsterdam’s club scene is experiencing a renaissance with new venues and some of the most forward-thinking promoters and club-owners on the circuit. “Amsterdam has traditionally been one of the greatest cities in the world for nightlife” confirms DJ Roog – one half of Dutch duo Hardsoul, who are at the forefront of all that happens on the Amsterdam dance scene. “What’s happening now is that Amsterdam has become the new capital for lots of alternative styles of music; it’s kind of becoming the new Berlin”.
It’s not hard to see why this kind of talk is fast becoming popular opinion among those with their fingers most firmly pressed on the pulse, with the calibre of clubs that the city boasts surpassing cities vastly bigger than the modest ‘Dam. From Studio 80’s stripped-back, no-frills interior favoured by the techno crowd to Club NL, where A-listers Naomi Campbell and Mick Jagger can be found rubbing sholders with us mere mortals, the choice for the discerning clubber is an enviable one. Not to mention arguably Amsterdam’s most glamorous club; Jimmy Woo, which is based on the concept of a fictional Chinese triad tycoon who enjoyed throwing extravagant parties in an uber high-tech club environment.
As Hardsoul, Roog and brother Greg have been fighting for their home city’s place on the global scene for more than a decade. “Because of Amsterdam’s great party people we have some of the coolest parties on the planet!” enthuses Roog; exhibiting a passion that has been rewarded on their latest undertaking.
Along with fellow Dutchmen Rene and Gascon aka Chocolate Puma, they have mixed Defected In The House Amsterdam ’09; the latest offering from label giants Defected Records. The latest in the acclaimed ‘In The House’ series, this is the first compilation that focuses on a city rather than an artist – further proof that those in the know are investing heavily in the Dutch capital. “What we wanted to do was to include all the new sounds we bring, such as traditional soulful and to what people call ‘minimal’ today “says Roog of their mix. “We wanted to put that all in the mix and not just be about only one sound, so we decided to go across the board. It goes from traditional soulful to minimal tech-house and everything in-between because we’re into so many different aspects of house, and we wanted to show that on the CD”.
While Hardsoul move across a varied soundscape on their mix, Chocolate Puma’s is unashamedly upfront, ‘main room’ house. “It reflects what we’re currently playing” explains Rene “which we felt was very important to do with the mix. We are still holding back a bit because we haven’t included some of the tracks we play in our sets as we thought they wouldn’t make sense on a CD which people will then play in their car on in a shop. I think those tracks are perhaps too hard, and would work best on the dance floor. That said, we really tried to transfer our energy from our sets onto the mix and are really happy with the result.”
In fact, every track on the compilation – like their live sets – is either a Chocolate Puma remix, production or re-edit, making it part artist album, part traditional mix compilation. “It’s very satisfying for us, it just feels right” says Rene. “A few years ago we decided to just play our own productions and in doing it that way, we can keep really focused on what’s happening on the dance-floor, and can then see how we can translate that in the studio. It works really well for us”.
To add to the appeal of the comp, Hardsoul and Chocolate Puma have combined to produce a track especially for the it; ‘R2G2’. “They’re fucking geniuses!” exclaims Roog when asked about the credentials of their counterparts. “Godfather’s of the Dutch house scene; that’s all we can say about them.” “We’re very happy with the track” chuckles Rene “and we think that it reflects both the soulful side of Hardsoul and the slightly ‘tougher’ beats of Chocolate Puma.”
So as far as box-ticking goes, Amsterdam excels in pretty much any category you’d like to throw at it. International dance event that rivals – and in some people’s eyes surpasses – the infamous Miami Winter Music Conference? Check. Dedicated compilation from one of the world’s most experienced dance labels? Check. A host of clubs more than ready to accommodate even the most seasoned clubber? Check. But all this would be mere dressing if it were not for one key ingredient. “There are a lot of creative people over here, and once in a while I think everything just locks in, and the scene in a city just becomes bigger because more people can influence each other” Rene explains. “As well as that there are a lot of producers/DJ’s, a lot of young guys and girls who are doing really well, and maybe that reflects the city as a whole.”
And what an attractive reflection it is. Let’s just hope we can get involved before everyone else does.
Defected In The House Amsterdam ’09 is out now on Defected Records
When we did the photoshoot together with Roog & Greg of Hardsoul for the Amsterdam In The House compilation we came up with the brilliant idea to do a collaboration with the guys.
So the next day they sent us some cool parts of a track they had been working on. We beefed up the beats, added strings and bass, and before we knew it the heads at the Choco Labs were bouncing. The result: R2G2.
Available now @ Beatport.com, defected.com and traxsource.com as part of the Amsterdam In The House compilation

Defected Records dedicates its 30th compilation to Amsterdam. The double cd Defected In The House presents Amsterdam 09 is mixed by our friends Roog & Greg of Hardsoul and yours truly.
The double album will be released on august 28th and comes with a booklet with all of Hardsoul’s and our favourite spots in Amsterdam.
We all put a lot of effort and hard work into this mix. Expect lots of exclusives and edits especially made for this compilation. Some of them will be available as separate download.
Here’s an overview with some comments of our part of the compilation:
1. Fresh Tunes #1 – Ha Ha (CP Re-edit)
We originally released this back in 1993 as a white label, and later licensed it to Strictly Rhythm. This is a cool edit we did for our DJ-sets.
2. Basco – Only You (TGM Remix – CP Re-edit)
Back in the 90′s Basco was our breakbeat project. We still play the TGM mix of this song, but we thought it needed some more oompf. So we did an edit and remastered it, and is know a perfect warm-up for our sets.
3. Chocolate Puma – Whohadnuffdrums’ – Chocolate Puma – Dub of Boom / Michel Cleis Ft. Totó La Momposina – La Mezcla
So here’s 3 tracks on top of each other. Shovell banging the drums on Whohaddrums, the mad sounds of Dub Of Boom and the cool percussion of La Mezcla.
4. Chocolate Puma – Route’ – Louie Vega and Jay – Sinister / Sealee starring Julie McKnight – Diamond Life (Accapella)
This track was originally a remix we did a few years ago for a certain major label, but it was rejected. We still liked the backing track, so we threw away the original vocals and put the lovely Julie McKnight on top.
5. Bassjackers – Sujo’ (Bart B More Balkan Edit – CP Refix) / Todd Terry presents CLS – Can You Feel It (Accapella)
Very cool track by Dutch producers Bassjackers. We like the bassdrum pattern. Bart B More did the Balkan Edit, and we fixed it with some extra drums and the Can You Feel It vocals.
6. Sole Fusion – Bass Tone (Chocolate Puma Remix)
This was a tough one, remixing one of our favourite classics by Sole Fusion. But in the end it works very well!
7. Jark Prongo – Big Bam Boom
A track we did under our Jark Prongo moniker. We did this track a few years ago, but it never got released. We always play it in our sets, so we thought it was time to bring it out. Minimal bad-ass crunk tech.
8. Bingo Players vs Chocolate Puma – Disco Electrique (Vocal Mix)
Our biggest track since Miami. Still ripping dancefloors.
9. Sil – Dirty Windows’ (Chocolate Puma Remix) / Enzyme Black – I Can See The Light (Accapella)
One of Zki’s first records, a collab he did with Olav Basoski. Recently we gave it the CP treatment.
10. Chocolate Puma – I Wanna Be U (2009 Rework)
Our first Chocolate Puma release. Hit the UK chart at #6 in 2001. Featured here is our 2009 rework, which hopefully captures the same feeling, but has tighter and a more up to date production.
11. Chocolate Puma – Bugel
Another exclusive. Nice, dubby and a bit weird. That’s how we like it.
12. Chocolate Puma Ft. Shermanology – Only Love Can Save Me (Dub)
The dub of this collab with the mighty Shermanology.
13. Chocolate Puma vs Baggi Begovic Ft. Mitch Crown – Solarianism
And yet another exclusive. First time we’re doing a collab with housemaster Baggi and the incredible Mitch, and we think it turned out prety good! Also check the collab we did with Hardsoul. It’s featured on their CD and it’s called R2G2.
14. Chocolate Puma – Morning Rain (Moist Dub Bonus Beats) / Bart Claessen – First Light (Chocolate Puma Chords) / Chocolate Puma – Believe (Accapella)
Here we put another 3 songs together. The Moist Bonus Beats of Morning Rain always work very well, and combined with the chords of our remix for First Light and vocals of Always & Forever singer David, it got even better.
15. Shovell & The Latin Hooligans – Soul Makossa (Chocolate Puma Remix)
Still a favourite on our dancefloors. Tribal saxophone on acid.
16. Klement Bonelli & Brahms – Los Chicanos (Main Mix) / D.H.S. – House Of God ($50 Mix)
When we got the bootleg Koen Groeneveld did of House Of God we thought it was massive. The same goes for Bonelli & Brahms’ Los Chicanos. So when we mashed the 2 together it ended up in total mayhem.
Last month was a very busy month for us! Lots of gigs and lots of studio work!
Bloemendaal was intense, Dance Valley was massive, Matrixx in the park was crazy, Cannes was posh and mad as hell!
We just finished work on our upcoming ‘Defected In The House Amsterdam’ compilation, for which we made lots of special edits and exclusive new tracks, and did collaborations with Baggi Bagovic and Hardsoul. It will be hitting the shops in a few weeks.
Back in 1993 we did a Fresh Fruit Remix of ‘South Street Player – Who Keeps Changing Your Mind’. At that time we had such crappy equipment, that we couldn’t do a full vocal mix, but only a dub. We fixed that now and delivered a full vocal edit of this classic Remix. We also remixed the classic Masters At Work Track ‘Bass Tone’ by Sole Fusion. Both should be out soon on Strictly.
We also remixed a song by two really big international artists, and we think it turned out pretty neat! Expect that within the next few weeks.
We’ll be diving back into the studio now and will be preparing for our upcoming gigs.

15-08-2009 – Zomerkriebels Festival – Leidsche Rijn

21 years of House Music!
16-08-2009 – Super You&Me/Stealth Live – BLM9 – Bloemendaal
We will be playing at the Stealth Live Area.
Drum Warrior Shovell, who also did the drums on our song Whohaddrums, asked us to remix his cover of the classic 70′s afro-disco track Soul Makossa. So we looped the hypnotising voice, put the saxophone through a filter and banged some beats on top of it. Result is this tribal-sax-turned-into-acid-houser. Hope you like!
Releasedate is 8th of june 2009 on Defected.
We’re hitting the airwaves again! After having a feature in Roger Sanchez’ Release Yourself Show, we did another DJ-mix, this time for Defected Radio.
You can listen to the stream here.
